Fall is here, and with it comes my favorite challenge: layering. We want to look chic and not feel claustrophobic. There’s nothing better than that first crisp fall morning when you get to assemble an outfit that's interesting, textured, and perfectly ready for whatever the day's fluctuating temperature throws at you. The secret to great layering isn't just what you wear, but the proportions and the intent behind it. The goal is to add depth and interest without creating bulk or that suffocating, 'stuck-in-a-straightjacket' feeling.
Here are 3 of my personal, tried-and-true layers to help you master the art of the fall fit:
1. The VEST
The vest is arguably the most powerful layering piece because it adds warmth and dimension without adding sleeve bulk. There are so many vest shapes you can choose for your body type or fit preference. A vest should contrast with your base layer in texture or length. If you're wearing a thin long-sleeve tee or a fitted turtleneck, opt for an oversized, quilted, or chunky knit vest. This contrast highlights the shape of your arms and shoulders, making the overall look tailored. If your base layer is voluminous (like a structured button-down), try a more fitted, cropped vest. You can play with color, pattern, and texture. The vest is the only piece that should feel restrictive. If it's too tight across your chest or hips, it'll make your base layer bunch up, defeating the purpose of a smooth fit.

2. The SCARF
Think of the scarf as your final, artistic flourish or your wearable punctuation mark. They are functional for warmth, yes, but their real power lies in their ability to manipulate color and texture near your face. When wearing a chunky knit or a blazer, avoid complicated knots that add bulk around your neck. Instead, try the simple, long drape, letting the ends hang low. This creates vertical lines that instantly counteract the 'boxy' feel that multiple layers can create. Use your scarf to introduce a complementary color or a bold print that ties your entire look together. If your outfit is all neutrals (navy sweater, black pants), a scarf can be a pop of fun. The maximalist in me loves statement scarves. My favorites are from Rio Branner. they are truly wearable art.

3. The TURTLENECK
Turtlenecks are one of the most versatile items you will own. You can vary the material you feel comfortable in (we always try and opt for natural fibers like wool, cotton, or cashmere). The turtleneck is the perfect base layer under dresses, chunky knits, jackets, and especially vests! It adds clean height and warmth without taking up visual space in the outfit itself.

The Final Layer: Intentionality
Layering is an act of curation. It’s about being intentional with every piece you put on. The only way to stop feeling claustrophobic in your outfit is to practice and play with proportions until you find the formula that feels completely effortless on your body. So, get into your closet and start experimenting. Don't be afraid to mix those textures, drape that scarf, and bring on the bold colors. Your ideal fall look is ready to be uncovered, one layer at a time.
Happy layering!
