I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen something on a hanger and thought, no way. Too boxy. Too clingy. Not my style. Not flattering (whatever that even means). And yet, the moment I actually try it on, I’m surprised. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn’t. But I never really know until I put it on my body. Trying something on is an extra step. It takes time. But it’s the only way to know if something truly feels like you. Online shopping makes it easy to fall into the trap of picking the size we think we are, only to have it show up and fit completely differently. Sizing is inconsistent across brands and the number on the tag is just a guide, not a rule. Getting familiar with how different brands fit your body is key.
One of the best ways to make online shopping easier is to know your measurements. Having your bust, waist, and hip measurements written down and up to date makes it so much easier to compare them to a brand’s size chart. It takes out the guesswork and helps you order the right size the first time. If you do not know your measurements, take the time to get them done or measure yourself at home. It will completely change the way you shop.
Online shopping can be a great resource, but only if you set yourself up for success. If you are already planning to return something, ordering multiple sizes can save you from disappointment. That way, you are trying things on at home instead of relying on a size chart that might not reflect the way something actually fits and feels.*
And then there is the idea of flattering. We have been conditioned to think that “flattering” means slimming, elongating, or shaping our bodies in a certain way. But does something have to be flattering to be right? What if it just feels good? What if it makes you happy? What if it sparks something in you that is more exciting than just following the rules?
Most of us gravitate toward the same silhouettes over and over again, which can make our wardrobes feel uninspired. I love jackets. I could buy a new one every week. But when it comes to simple, structured t-shirts, which are the foundation of so many outfits, I never invested the time. I had to try on 20 before I found the one. It was worth it.
Trying things on, literally and metaphorically, opens the door to experimentation. And that is where personal style really comes alive. Sometimes a piece does not feel right at first, but styling and layering can completely transform it. A belt, the right shoes, or rolling the sleeves can change the proportion and make something feel more intentional. Layering can add interest and balance to an outfit, taking something from “almost” to “absolutely.” The more you play around, the more you see the potential in pieces you might have overlooked.
If you are ready to evolve your style, our Life Changer package is all about guiding you through that process. It is about letting go of what no longer fits, not just in size but in feeling, and making room for what does.
So next time you are shopping, browsing, or standing in front of your closet thinking, I could never pull that off, just try it on. You might be surprised.
